On the Mac your only free choice is iMovie really. I think JahShaka might have a Mac version too, but can’t recall for sure. You could investigate that.

If you don’t want to invest in the Final Cut Studio 2 package, why not try Final Cut Express? Its only the editing software and much cheaper. Sure its not free, but its very robust, and can use lots of 3rd party filters, which most cheap/free options can not. I would at least consider that.
There is also Adobe Premiere Elements (works on both Windows and OS X). Again not free, but a very robust option to consider.
Otherwise the bigger name free options are for Windows. There’s Video Spin, WAX, Zwei-stein, ZS4 Video Editor, and a couple others I can’t recall right now.
